Internship

COW F trains individuals who feel called to service in developing countries and wish to acquire skills in community development and humanitarian missions for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC).  Interns will study and work for three months to one year in their area of interest within COW F’s programs in Kitgum.

Goals of Our Internship Program

  • Develop skills in sustainable Orphans and Vulnerable Children care and support program.
  • Learn approaches to community development, cross-cultural communication and adult education on Orphans and vulnerable children.
  • Develop a holistic approach to the best interest of the child in line with the UN convention on the Rights of the Child.
  • Understand the socio-political contexts of the child and identify appropriate humanitarian responses.
  • Become familiar with food technology, nutrition (food security), health and gender issues.

How Do Interns Learn?

COW Foundation provides care and support for OVC though socialization of support.  We believe in supporting the OVC who are next to kin in the belief that children belong to a certain social setting, and therefore, it will not disrupted the social-cultural set up.

The interns will have the opportunity to:

  • be part of the field team that supports the organization to achieve its vision, mission and goals in the support of the existing projects being implemented
  • assist in the development of monthly, quarterly and annual reports
  • develop a final internship report on the overall experience, lessons learnt
  • review project through monitoring and evaluation tool
  • research on OVC health, nutrition and education
  • teach classes
  • speaking to church and community groups
  • learn skills in Growth monitoring and child care

To supplement their practical learning, interns attend classroom lessons two afternoons per week. The lessons will cover a broad range of topics, but centers on sustainable OVC care and support. Field trips may be also organized to other organization.

What Do Interns Receive?

COW Foundation provides interns with housing and utilities.  In regards to medical care, we believe that they shall have their insurance cover.  We equally help interns with clearing their travel documents, but they must meet the financial obligation on visa and other internal travels. The interns may purchase, at their expense, both staple and non-staple foods.  However, one of the local staff of the organization will be assigned to guide them on such matters.  We are located around 800 meters from a grocery store and 200 meters from the post office.
In keeping with our emphasis on sustainable living, housing is simple but adequate, for our interns and volunteers. In addition, we have limited housing for families. The facility may have a communal kitchen, and residents work together to keep the facility clean and healthful.
